UN55D8000: One of Most Wanted Samsung 2011 LED TV

Samsung made a number of internal and external changes from last year’s UN55C8000. We liked a number of the new attributes: 3D performance, signal processing, and the wide selection of user picture controls. However, we spotted two performance issues: screen uniformity and poor vertical viewing angle, detailed below. Samsung UN55D8000 LED LCD is their top of the line series, offering the most features and highest performance of any of their 2011 LCD models. The 55-inch, 240 Hz refresh rate design provides excellent screen brightness with outstanding energy efficiency. New for 2011 is an LED dimming circuit Samsung calls “micro dimming” for deep blacks, a QWERTY remote control, built-in Internet browser, updated graphic user interface and improved 2D and 3D performance claims.

Cosmetically, Samsung trimmed the frame around the active picture area to an astonishing 0.94-inches, giving this Samsung UN55D8000 HDTV an almost all-image appearance once powered-up. It is one of the best-looking TV designs of all time. The display sits on a four-legged, chrome-finished swivel stand (included). Samsung cleaned up the rear by making all connections built-in, sans component and composite AV inputs which, like last year, still require included dongles. With a panel depth of just 1.2 inches the 8000 is one of the slimmest sets available. The remote included with flagship Samsung TVs like the UN55UND8000 is a flipper. The top side of the wedge-shaped rectangle offers standard TV controls that shoot infrared commands to the TV, while the bottom gets a full QWERTY keypad along with a screen, and works via Bluetooth (which doesn't need line-of-sight).

There's a big difference between seeing the game and seeing every split second of it. That's where Auto Motion Plus 240Hz technology comes in. All the action in every frame is analyzed and then adjusted so nothing goes by in a blur. From quarterbacks to cyber warrior, the action is always smooth, sharp and fluid. Enjoy the convenience and connectivity of free, IP-based, picture-in-picture video calls via Skype, right from your couch. Skype is nice on a 15-inch laptop, but it's a whole new experience on a display this size. Connect a thumb drive or digital camera quickly and easily via one of the UN55D8000 USB ports. An intuitive, user-friendly interface allows access to videos, music, or pictures via the remote.

The UN55D8000 performed well overall in color accuracy category. The skin tones of Sam and Alan in Chapter 3 and Chapter 19, for example, looked as accurate as on our reference, as did the green trees and the pale face of Quorra in Chapter 19. Saturation was very good and we appreciated that near-black areas didn't veer far into blue. The exception, again, came toward the edges of the screen, where blue crept in and tainted colors in midbright and darker ranges. The UE55D8000 is undeniably a spectacular LED screen. Its pencil thin bezel makes 3D more immersive, which helps mitigate against those crosstalk effects. The set’s 2D picture bristles with detail, although Motion Plus picture processing introduces too many artefacts for our liking. The new Smart Hub is arguably the biggest attraction, with more apps on offer than ever before.
